Ex-Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano is open to move to Mexico’s Liga MX
Former Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano, who resigned abruptly for personal reasons after seven games this season, resurfaced in Mexico City on Sunday, where he was a guest ambassador for a watch party of FC Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Real Madrid in El Clasico.
Mascherano said he is enjoying some time off with his family, is not sure where he will land next, but did not rule out a move to the Mexican Liga MX.
“I like following Mexican football,” he told reporters. “If the opportunity presents itself to coach there, why not?
“It’s a competitive league with good players, strong teams and entertaining matches. Their format is also interesting. We’ll have to see how the championship ends this year. Heading into the quarterfinals, there are big teams left. Now, we have to watch closely with what happens with Toluca and the others. There are a lot of Argentine coaches in Liga MX, and that is another reason I follow it closely.”
He spoke about the young generation of young players who are excelling at Barcelona and how they compare with the generation of players he was with there, including Lionel Messi, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez.
“It’s a great generation, like the generation I played with 15 years ago with many academy players moving up to the first team, winning titles for Barcelona and doing well for their national team,” Mascherano said. “In that sense, it’s very similar and I think Spain’s national team has benefited greatly from these generations of Barcelona players.”
He said he hopes Argentina can repeat at World Cup champion.
“Hopefully, they can repeat, as that is what all Argentines want,” he said. “Obviously, that is not easy, but Argentina does have a team that is in very good form and that leads to high expectations.”
Asked how he saw Messi during his last few months coaching the Argentine legend and how he looks ahead of the World Cup, Mascherano gave a short answer: “Fine, fine. He always looks good.”
