Berterame scores elusive first goal, but Inter Miami finishes with another draw
German Berterame finally scored his first goal wearing pink and black.
He later came within inches of scoring a second, which would have been a game-winner and the first victory for Inter Miami at Nu Stadium.
Instead, Berterame was ruled offside, and another match filled with mixed results ended with what’s become an all-too familiar result of late for the home side as Inter Miami finished with a 2-2 draw with the New York Red Bulls.
Inter Miami remained unbeaten in its last eight matches across all competitions.
But it settled for its second consecutive draw in league play and since opening its new home stadium on April 4. It’s also the fifth draw across all competitions during its unbeaten stretch.
“There are little details that still need to be worked on and corrected,” Berterame said. “We have to continue to focus on that and make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
Inter Miami finished with 16 shots overall, including seven on goal and took 12 corner kicks, to only five overall for the Red Bulls. Both of New York’s shots on target resulted in goals.
Berterame’s elusive first goal with Inter Miami (3-1-3, 12 points), which signed him for $15 million this offseason, came following a rush into the Red Bulls’ goal area by Lionel Messi. A ball that was deflected from Messi ended up in front of Berterame, and the former Monterrey superstar buried a great shot past Red Bulls’ keeper Ethan Horvath in the 55th minute to give Miami its first lead ever at Nu Stadium, 2-1.
“It was a week of a lot of patience and a lot of work, and not just the week but since the games kicked off there’s been a lot of sacrifice to get here,” Berterame said. “I didn’t really pay attention to social media and what was said. I just tried to be patient, and I knew the goal would come.”
Mateo Silvetti had evened the match in the first and only minute of stoppage time before halftime to pull Miami even after the Red Bulls (3-2-2, 11 points) took an early lead on a goal by Jorge Ruvalcaba in the 15th minute.
But Inter Miami’s defense was unable to hold the lead as Julian Hall, the Red Bulls’ leading scorer, made a brilliant move into Miami’s box and fired a cross to Adri Mehmeti for the equalizing goal in the 77th minute.
Hall assisted on both goals for New York.
“I think today we deserved much more that we came away with,” Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. “We paid dearly for a lot of mistakes we made. But overall, I felt like we did enough to win, but we’re leaving with a sour taste in our mouths again and the same result as last week. What matters here is to win. There’s no other option.”
Inter Miami was fortunate the Red Bulls didn’t even the match in the 62nd minute on another goal off a rebound, but Cade Cowell was ruled offside.
Berterame would have been the hero of an Inter Miami victory had it not been for brilliance from Horvath in the 90th minute.
Horvath made two remarkable saves on Lionel Messi after he began a rush upfield following a giveaway by the Red Bulls near midfield. Luis Suarez fired a shot off the first save on Messi. Berterame then appeared to tap home the winner just inside the post, but was ruled offside.
Messi also missed a close range shot moments earlier when he hit the post with that side of the goal wide open.
Suarez entered the match in the 79th minute for Ian Fray as Inter Miami hoped he’d produce a similar boost on the attack as he did a week earlier when he scored in the second half against Austin.
Fray was seen holding his upper thigh area immediately after extending on a high kick to clear the ball just before exiting the game. Mascherano said he had no update yet on Fray’s status and that they would evaluate his condition over the next few days.
Berterame was in the starting lineup after entering as a reserve in Inter Miami’s previous two league matches. The move came with Tadeo Allende sitting out Saturday’s game thanks to an unspecified injury.
For the second consecutive match, Inter Miami fell behind at home in the first half.
Ruvalcaba had the Red Bulls’ other goal to open the scoring in the 15th minute of the match after Hall drew away two Miami defenders and delivered him a perfect cross.
“That was their only chance in the first half, right?” Mascherano asked rhetorically. “That’s futbol. It can be beautiful. It can also be cruel.”
Although Inter Miami outplayed the Red Bulls in the first half, outshooting them 9-3 overall and 4-1 in shots on target, it trailed until the lone minute of first-half stoppage time. Rodrigo De Paul lifted a long cross past several defenders to Silvetti, who timed a perfect shot with his right foot past Horvath.
With the goal, Silvetti became the first Inter Miami player not named Messi this season to have multiple goals as he tallied his second.
Messi, who has a team-leading five goals this season, was held scoreless, and is still chasing his first assist of 2026.
It has been an ongoing quandary for Inter Miami as to how to produce goals consistently from sources other than their megastar.
Sergio Reguilon also returned to Inter Miami’s starting lineup after missing last week’s match with an injury.
