Inter Miami

Inside Inter Miami: Unlikely hero in PKs, Messi’s hair, gesture to Mexican fans and more

A new haircut, but the same old Lionel Messi - albeit with a controversial gesture to Mexican fans - and an unlikely hero highlighted Inter Miami’s first week back on the pitch.

The club secured a penalty kick-shootout comeback victory over Mexican league powerhouse Club America in its preseason opener last Saturday in Las Vegas.

Inside Inter Miami is back to dissect the exhibition triumph, highlighted by the game-winning penalty kick delivered by 17-year-old Santi Morales, the son of Inter Miami assistant coach Javier Morales.

We hear reaction from Morales about the winning shot and his experience playing in the game with Messi and others.

Messi has a new haircut, but showed the same dominant skills in flashes during the match and later scored and gestured to the Mexican fans who had been booing him most of the game, inciting more rage from them and headlines around the world.

From a strategic standpoint we saw glimpses of what the team’s lineup and approach could be this season under new coach Javier Mascherano.

We get injury updates from Mascherano including the possible timetable for a return for starting goalkeeper Drake Callender.

We look at Inter Miami’s Benja Cremaschi, who started for Team USA during its impressive victory over Venezuela in Miami last weekend.

And what’s next as the club prepares for its three-game preseason international stretch with games Jan. 29 in Lima, Feb. 2 in Panama and Feb. 8 in Honduras.
