Gonzalo Higuain says father’s comments about his retirement were “a misunderstanding”

Inter Miami forward Gonzalo Higuain on Tuesday clarified comments made by his father, Jorge, who told TNT Sports in Argentina that the 34-year-old will retire at the end of this season. Higuain called it “a misunderstanding.”

Higuain is in the final year of his contract with Inter Miami. His father said that his son told him he would hang up his cleats at the end of the 2022 MLS season.

“I don’t think he will return to Argentina, he told me that he will retire at the end of the season,” Higuain’s father told TNT Sports in Argentina. “I’d like to see him in the world of football after the end of his career. He knows a lot about this sport. He has everything to triumph. It will be a shame if he doesn’t continue in football.”

Higuain said after practice on Tuesday that his father spoke prematurely and that his comments were not accurate.

“It was a misunderstanding that he had with me,” Higuain said. “At no moment did I mention retirement. He understood wrong, it can happen. But it’s not reality. I am focused on this club, on completing my contract and when the moment comes, if I decide to make that decision, it will be me who communicates it. Only me. Other people can say things, in this case my father, or other people, but it not what I am saying. So, if it happens, again, I will be the first to announce it but for now my head is on this club and my contract.”

Asked if he’s considered retiring, Higuain replied: “Well, I’m getting close to the end of my playing days, but it’s not what is on my mind right now. I am thinking about fulfilling my contract and at the end of the year we’ll see how I feel. I’ll sit down with the club and figure out what’s the best decision. But my decision right now is to have a great season. I just wanted to clarify that so there aren’t any more misunderstandings.

Higuain began his career in Argentina with River Plate and then went to Europe, where he played for Real Madrid, Napoli, and Juventus, with loan spells at AC Milan and Chelsea. He joined Inter Miami in 2020 and has scored 15 goals in 44 games. During his decade with the Argentine national team he scored 31 goals in 75 games.

Inter Miami is 0-4-1 so far this season and plays at home Saturday afternoon against the New England Revolution.
