River Plate to play Millonarios at DRV PNK Stadium in a battle of South American giants
River Plate and Millonarios, two of the most famous soccer teams in South America, will play a friendly at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale on Jan. 14. The match is being dubbed “Duelo de Millonarios” as both clubs use the Millonarios nickname.
It is the latest international match to be played at the Inter Miami home stadium, following the recent USA vs Germany women’s match and the men’s Colombia vs. Paraguay match scheduled for Saturday night. The Colombian squad, which has been training at the facility all week, includes veteran stars Radamel Falcao and James Rodriguez.
Based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, River Plate has produced a long list of notable players, including Inter Miami’s Gonzalo and Federico Higuaín, Ballon d’Or winners Alfredo Di Stefano and Omar Sivori, El Principe Enzo Francescoli, Ariel Ortega, and Javier Mascherano. Former Inter Miami center back Leandro Gonzalez Pirez is on loan with River.
River has won a record 35 Argentine Primera División titles, four Copa Libertadores titles, a Copa Sudamericana title, and three Argentine Cup titles.
The game will likely be the debut of new coach Martin Demichelis, the former Argentine player who is replacing the departing Marcelo Gallardo.
Colombian power Millonarios has won 20 titles, making it the second most successful club in Colombian soccer. They won 15 Colombian First Division titles, a Copa Merconorte title and three Copa Colombia titles. Some of their top talents include Inter Miami’s Emerson Rodriguez and former stars Di Stefano, Venezuelan national team goalkeeper Wuilker Fariñez, and MLS standouts Chicho Arango and Román Torres.
