Marlins’ Otto Lopez, Max Meyer named first-time MLB All-Stars
The Miami Marlins’ strong first half has become harder to ignore. Now, two of the biggest reasons are headed to the All-Star Game.
Shortstop Otto Lopez and starting pitcher Max Meyer were named National League All-Stars on Saturday, giving Miami multiple All-Star selections for the first time since 2023.
Both are first-time All-Stars and will represent the Marlins at the 96th MLB All-Star Game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia.
For Lopez, the selection comes after a first half that made him one of the hardest players in baseball to leave out, although he did not even advance to the final round of the MLB’s fan vote to compete for a starting spot, despite leading the league with a .337 batting average
“Otto Lopez is one of the best pure hitters in all of baseball. He leads baseball in hits and batting average and has the chance to be the fourth Marlin to win a batting title,” former Marlins pitcher Dontrelle Willis said while discussing his selection on the Fox broadcast. “ They feel like they can make the postseason right now, and Otto Lopez is at the center of that.”
The 27-year-old leads the majors through 87 games, he’s also tied for second in doubles with 23, tied for third in triples with five, ranks sixth among National League hitters with 171 total bases and is tied for ninth with 17 stolen bases.
Per FanGraphs, he leads all NL shortstops with a 3.8 fWAR, which ranks second among NL position players.
His 37 multihit games passed Miguel Cabrera’s previous club record of 36 for the most by a Marlins player before the All-Star break.
Lopez becomes the first Marlins shortstop to be named an All-Star since Hanley Ramírez, who made three straight appearances from 2008 to 2010. He also joins Ramírez, Álex González and Édgar Rentería as the only Marlins shortstops to earn a spot.
Meyer, meanwhile, earned his first All-Star selection after putting together the best stretch of his major-league career.
Before taking his first loss of the season against the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday, Meyer opened the year 9-0 through his first 17 starts, tying Liván Hernández’s 1997 mark for the best start to a season in Marlins history. His 17 consecutive starts without a loss also set a club record for the longest such streak in a single season.
The former No. 3 overall pick is 9-1 with a 2.53 ERA, 112 strikeouts and a 1.11 WHIP through 18 starts.
The 27-year-old right-hander leads the Marlins in strikeouts, opponents’ batting average (.205) and WHIP, while also setting career highs in starts and innings pitched.
Meyer becomes the 11th different Marlins starting pitcher to be named a National League All-Star and the first since Sandy Alcantara in 2022, and is the first homegrown Marlins starter selected since Trevor Rogers in 2021.
