Marlins claim a reliever, make seven roster moves for a second consecutive day
The Marlins made seven roster moves for the second consecutive day on Thursday, claiming right-handed reliever Zach Brzykcy off waivers from Washington and making procedural moves with six others.
Pitchers Braxton Garrett, Max Meyer, Anthony Bender and Andrew Nardi were all moved from the 60-day injured list to the 40-man roster on the final day that teams were required to cut their 40-man rosters to 40.
The Marlins have 38 players on their 40-man roster, leaving them with two open spots to add players via free agency or trades. But 40-man rosters are fluid; teams can add and remove players at any time.
Garrett missed all of last season after undergoing revision surgery on the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow. The 2016 first-round pick is 16-19 with a 4.03 ERA in 65 games (including 63 starts) in his Marlins career.
Meyer underwent surgery for a labrum tear in his left hip last June, ending his season after 12 starts. The Marlins’ 2020 first-round pick finished a 3-5 record and 4.73 ERA with 68 strikeouts in 64 2⁄3 innings.
Bender had a 3-5 record with a 2.16 ERA and four saves in 51 games for the Marlins last season but missed the final six weeks with a leg injury.
The left-handed Nardi missed all of last season because of a back injury. Nardi, who has a 4.51 ERA in 135 Marlins appearances, is one of eight arbitration-eligible Marlins and the team must decide whether to tender him.
Two spots on the 40-man roster were created when the Marlins out-righted right-hander Christian Roa and infielder Jack Winkler to Triple A Jacksonville.
The newest Marlin, Brzykcy made 26 relief appearances with the Nationals in 2025 and allowed 23 runs in 23 innings, while striking out 24.
The 26-year-old Hickory, N.C. native was originally signed by Washington as a non-drafted free agent in July 2020. In four minor league seasons, Brzykcy (whose name is pronounced Brick-SEE) had a 16-8 record, a 3.89 ERA, 17 saves and 255 strikeouts in 185 innings.
