Marlins’ Conine set to undergo surgery. And updates on Eury Perez, Agustin Ramirez, more
While one key member of the Marlins’ future is getting closer to a return, another player who was making a strong case to be a key part of that future is about to undergo major surgery.
Outfielder Griffin Conine, who was off to a strong start this season, will undergo surgery to repair a dislocated left shoulder on Tuesday. It’s possible he could miss the remainder of the season, but that was expected to become clearer during a Monday afternoon meeting with Los Angeles-based doctor Neal ElAttrache.
Conine, 27, was hitting .281 (with a .352 on-base average) with seven doubles, one home run and seven RBI in 71 plate appearances in 20 games. He dislocated his shoulder sliding into second base on an RBI double in the Marlins’ 11-10 loss to the Phillies a week ago and subsequently was placed on the 60-day injured list.
Jesus Sanchez, Kyle Stowers, Derek Hill (who has been on the injured list), Dane Myers, Javier Sonoja, Ronny Simon and infielder Eric Wagaman are the Marlins’ outfield options moving forward.
Meanwhile, right-hander Eury Perez is moving closer to a return from Tommy John surgery after pitching one scoreless inning for Class A Jupiter on Saturday. He threw 19 pitches, including 11 for strikes, against Palm Beach and gave up a hit before he struck two two batters and induced a pop out for the third out.
Per mlb.com, his fastball topped out at 98.4 mph and batters swung and missed at his slider and curveball.
Perez, who underwent Tommy John surgery on April 8 of last year, could be back in the big leagues sometime in June.
Perez, 22, went 5-6 with a 3.15 ERA in 19 starts as a rookie in 2023, with 108 strikeouts and 72 hits allowed in 91 ⅓ innings.
Meanwhile, pitcher Ryan Weathers pitched three perfect innings in a rehab start in A ball over the weekend.
Payroll gap
The Marlins (with a $69 million payroll) on Monday night opened a series at the Dodgers, who have a $476 million payroll.
But asked about that, Marlins owner Bruce Sherman didn’t complain about the $406 million disparity in brief comments to the Athletic.
“I’m not going to comment on other clubs,” Sherman said. “I think they all play by the rules and regulations that we’ve established. We’re going to compete. We’ve competed with them in the past. We will continue to compete. I know the management, ownership well. Whether it’s the Dodgers or any other club, they’re following rules that we follow under our constitution. And they’re acceptable.”
Roster move
The Marlins demoted pitcher Connor Gillispie after he was shelled in Saturday’s 14-0 loss to Seattle. He’s 0-3 with an 8.65 ERA in six starts. Reliever Luarbert Arias was recalled; he had four saves and a 3.04 ERA in Jacksonville last season.
▪ Catcher Agustin Ramirez, promoted from Triple A last Monday, hit two home runs in Sunday’s loss at Seattle and ended his first week in the majors with eye-popping numbers: 9 for 19 with four doubles (.474 average), three home runs and five RBI with a .524 on-base average and a 1.682 on-base-plus-slugging percentage.
Per MLB.com’s Sarah Langs, his seven extra-base hits in his first five games tied with five others (including former Marlins outfielder Jorge Soler) for the most by any player in his first five games since at least 1901. He’s also the first player in at least the last 125 seasons to have three games with multiple extra-base hits within his first five career games.
▪ Joe Mack, another high-end Marlins catching prospect, is off to a 7-for-19 start (with a homer) with a .478 on-base average at Triple A Jacksonville after hitting .318 (.463 on base) with three homers and five RBI in 13 games and 56 plate appearances at Double Pensacola. He has 28 homers since the start of last season.
