Marlins hire new play-by-play voices on TV, radio and add former All Star closer in booth
The Marlins dipped into the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system this week to find their new radio play-by-play announcer. They also dipped into their past, hiring popular former All Star closer A.J. Ramos as a broadcaster.
Detailing all the team’s media developments:
▪ Kyle Sielaff, who has been the Marlins’ radio voice since Dave Van Horne retired before the 2022 season, recently was promoted to the team’s primary TV play-by-play job on FanDuel Sports Network Florida. He will call most games and replaces Paul Severino, who was dropped by the Marlins and FanDuel after seven seasons.
▪ With Sielaff promoted, the Marlins hired Pirates Triple A announcer Jack McMullen as the team’s new radio voice on WINZ-940 AM.
McMullen, who graduated from Syracuse University in 2020, also hosts the “Just Baseball Show” podcast.
McMullen has been the radio voice of the Triple A Indianapolis Indians for the past three seasons. He also previously called Ball State women’s basketball games and was a sideline reporter on Ball State football radiocasts.
The Marlins like his play-by-play skills as well as his talents as a podcaster, which they believe can be an asset as they explore new ways to reach fans.
▪ McMullen will handle all nine innings of radio play by play for about 120 games.
For at least 35 games, FanDuel Sports Network Florida Marlins studio host Craig Minervini will join McMullen in the radio booth and split play-by-play with him.
For the 127 or so other games, McMullen will be joined by a rotating group of analysts, including Ramos, Gaby Sanchez, Jeff Nelson and Kelly Saco.
Ramos is the newcomer of the group. He pitched 5 ½ seasons for the Marlins before being dealt to the Mets in July 2017.
Ramos was 17-18 with a 3.04 ERA and 99 saves in nine major league seasons, with 92 of those saves coming with the Marlins. In 2016, he converted his first 24 save opportunities and was named an All Star for the only time in his career.
▪ FanDuel Sports Network Florida retained the same four TV game analysts – Tommy Hutton, Rod Allen, Sanchez and Nelson. They will again split the full 160-game package, working alongside Sielaff. Hutton will call 60 games, all at home.
“From Joe Angel, Dave O’Brien to Len Kasper, Rich Waltz and Paul Severino, I have been a part of many Marlins moments, some good and some not so good,” Hutton said recently on X. “I congratulate Kyle Sielaff and look forward to another chapter.”
Besides getting a package of radio games, Minervini also will call as many as 15 games on TV when Sielaff is off and will remain a pre-game and postgame host on FanDuel Marlins coverage.
“It’s a versatile role this year for me with lots of TV/radio play-by-play in addition to hosting duties,” Minervini said. “A great way to celebrate my 24th year on the Marlins broadcasts!”
Minervini -- who is calling the Caribbean Series on MLB Network this week (including Friday’s 10 p.m. Mexico-Dominican Republic championship) -- and Orioles announcer Geoff Arnold had been finalists for the primary TV play-by-play job that went to Sielaff.
