Poll: How do you feel about Derek Jeter’s time as CEO of the Miami Marlins?

Derek Jeter abruptly stepped down as the CEO of the Miami Marlins after spending four seasons with the team. He and the Marlins are saying the decision was mutual, and Bruce Sherman said his team and Jeter have “agreed to officially end their relationship.”

Jeter, who was part of the group Sherman organized to buy the franchise from Jeffrey Loria in 2017, is also giving up his 4 percent ownership stake. He had one year left on a five-year contract to serve as Miami’s CEO.

“We had a vision five years ago to turn the Marlins franchise around, and as CEO, I have been proud to put my name and reputation on the line to make our plan a reality,” Jeter said in a statement. “Through hard work, trust and accountability, we transformed every aspect of the franchise, reshaping the workforce, and developing a long-term strategic plan for success.”

“That said, the vision for the future of the franchise is different than the one I signed up to lead. Now is the right time for me to step aside as a new season begins.”

In Jeter’s four seasons, Miami went 218-327 and made the MLB postseason once in 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic shortened the regular season to 60 games and led the league to expand the playoffs from 12 teams to 16. The Marlins failed to win 70 games in each of the other three seasons, including a 100-loss campaign in 2019.

Jeter and Co., however, did entirely reshape the organization’s minor-league system and now only eight players on Miami’s 40-man roster were with the franchise when Sherman bought the team. While they still had MLB’s fourth lowest payroll in 2021, the Marlins now have one of baseball’s top-ranked farm systems, with five of the top 100 prospects in MLB.com’s rankings.
