Southridge, Cooper City advance to the regional final in flag football
Quarterback Dontivia Tims scored three touchdowns to help the Southridge flag football team (10-2) defeat visiting Miami High (7-3) 33-13 in a Class 2A region semifinal on Friday night.
“My teammates were blocking and getting open, so it was easy to move the ball,” Tims said. “We’ll need to play harder in the next round to win.”
The Spartans’ defense came up big in the first half with three interceptions, two being returned for touchdowns. Brooke Gibson had a 37-yard return, and Shankevia Walker had a 23-yard return. A 20-yard pass from Tims to Gibson put Southridge up 26-0 at halftime.
Miami High scored twice in the second half, both on passes by Jaynah Rodriguez. Samylia Ward had a touchdown reception and an interception on defense for the Stingarees. Mona Odeh added a 4-yard touchdown reception.
Tims rushed for just over 100 yards, scored on a 6-yard run and ran in three extra points. Gerneriya Rodgers scored on a 15-yard pass from Tims.
Southridge will face Cooper City in a region final on Tuesday.

▪ Class 2A region semifinal at Ives Estates Park — Cooper City 26, Dr. Krop 8: Caitlin Dunn threw three touchdown passes, and Kimberly Slinkosky scored three times as the Cowboys improved to 14-1.
Galya Vicnansky scored and intercepted a pass, and Sammy Stofsky intercepted two passes. Also, Annie Clark and Juliette Polanco each had an interception.
▪ Class 2A region semifinal – Piper 7, Coral Glades 0: Emily Townsend scored the winner on a 1-yard run in the second quarter.
Monique LaFrance then caught an extra point pass from Townsend, and the defense was outstanding for the shutout as the host Bengals are now 14-1.
Because of field renovations, it marked the first home game for Piper. The Bengals will have their second on Tuesday at 7 against Seminole Ridge in a region final.
▪ Class 1A region semifinal at Gibson Park — Edison 20, Booker T. Washington 0: Destiny Doughty made four catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. She also had four flag pulls and an interception. Irenna Hines had five receptions for 76 yards and a touchdown and three rushes for 46 yards and an extra point. She also had four sacks and four flag pulls.
Quarterback Jaquala Brown was 9-of-12 passing for 182 yards and two touchdowns and an extra point. On defense, she had two flag pulls and intercepted a pass.
Brittany Julius caught two passes for 88 yards and a touchdown. On defense, she made three flag pulls and intercepted a pass. Chakeria Cooper had two receptions for 26 yards, four flag pulls and a sack. Quarterback Tatyana Fremont was 6-of-10 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown. She ran twice for 28 yards, and Serena Johnson recorded six flag pulls.
The Red Raiders (13-1) advance to a region final, where they will travel on Tuesday to play Pembroke Pines Charter.
▪ Class 1A region semifinal — Pembroke Pines Charter 35, Norland 0: Jahneal Morgan recorded three touchdowns and two interceptions to lead the visiting Jaguars (15-0).
Quarterback Christine Alayon threw four touchdowns and on defense intercepted a pass, and Ashlynn Correa caught a touchdown pass. The Vikings finished 7-4.
BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL
▪ Late Thursday: Miami-Dade County All-Star Match at SLAM — North d. South 25-18, 20-25, 25-22, 18-25, 15-10: Ransom Everglades’ Michael Colona led the North with 15 kills, 4 blocks and 10 service points. Mourning’s Sam Willinger and Riain Festege also played well for the North.
Liam Gilchrist sparked the South with 13 service points and eight kills. Columbus’ Logan Plummer (10 digs, six service points) and Southwest’s Andres Del Rio (six kills, two blocks) did a good job for the South, too.
It marked the final match coached by Mourning’s Dee Rey (North) and Killian’s Clinton Reid (South), as they are retiring from coaching.
BASKETBALL
R.M.F. Magazine is hosting its first “Respectys” Award Show on Thursday at The Germack Event Venue in Davie.
The “Respectys” is a tri-county awards show that will recognize both boys’ and girls’ basketball players from Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties.
Teams, coaches, players of the year as well as other categories, including Academic Player of the Year and Breakout Player of the Year, will be honored.
The event will also honor the Jim Riley (Kreul Classic) Lifetime Achievement Award and Wesley Frater Humanitarian Award.
