Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz calls Houston Astros whistleblower a ‘snitch’
Not everyone feels the same way about the Houston Astros.
At a time when many have criticized the club for stealing signs, David Ortiz instead took aim at the cheating scandal’s whistleblower Mike Fiers.
“After you make your money, after you get your ring, you decide to talk about it,” the Boston Red Sox legend said Thursday in Fort Myers, according to NESN. “Why don’t you talk about it during the season when it was going on? Why didn’t you say, ‘I don’t want to be no part of it?’ So you look like you’re a snitch.”
Fiers pitched for the Astros during their 2017 World Series run. He joined the Detroit Tigers the following year before finding his current home with the Oakland As. Ortiz, who serves as a special assistant in the Red Sox’s front office, later blamed the fans for not noticing Houston’s rather bold methods of cheating.
“People not stupid,” Ortiz added. “Like if I’m a fan that comes to that stadium for every home game like we have, at some point I’m going to hear the banging. And I’m talking about as a fan. ‘How come there’s thing banging going on every time we are hitting?’ It was something that from what I have seen, that it came to the point where it was obvious”
Athletes and media pundits alike have all disparaged the Astros since news first broke. Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout said he “lost respect for some guys.” New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge believes the Astros should be stripped of their title. Even LeBron James chimed in, telling MLB commissioner Rob Manfred to fix it.
In some sense, Ortiz was right. Fiers probably should’ve spoken up sooner. The timing, however, doesn’t make his deed any less noble.
