A catcher’s helmet might fail to protect your head. That’s why it’s been recalled

What good is a baseball catcher’s helmet that exposes the wearer to a head injury? The obvious answer is why Rawlings recalled 1,470 CHMACH-SR Senior Catcher’s Helmets in the United States and Canada on Thursday.

The exact problem, as stated in the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall notice: “The back plate of the catcher’s helmet can fail to protect the player, posing a risk of head injury to the user.”

Rawlings hasn’t heard of any head injuries from this issue with the helmets, which sold for $200 from July 2018 through September 2019.

This covers the catcher’s helmets with UPC codes 083321545504 (black/white), 083321545511 (green/white), 083321545528 (navy/white) and 083321545566 (red/white). Rawlings is offering a free replacement back plate for head sizes 7.5 and under and a full refund for head sizes above 7.5.

Contact the company at 800-729-5464 from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday, Eastern time or via email at returns@rawlings.com.
