Westminster Christian’s Jordan Cronkrite, one of three running backs who decommitted from the University of Miami over the past year, signed with the Florida Gators on Wednesday.

Cronkrite said he had decided on the Gators over West Virginia after visiting the Florida campus two weeks ago. He said he decommitted from Miami because of a “misunderstanding,” but he would not elaborate.

His decision to sign with Florida was a secret — only about 10 friends or family members knew — before revealing it to students, teachers and others inside the packed Westminster auditorium.

“It was a very hard decision — there were a lot of ups and downs with UM and all these other schools,” Cronkrite said. “But in the end, it was a great decision.”

The other running backs who decommitted from Miami in this class were St. Thomas Aquinas’ Jordan Scarlett (Florida) and Orlando West Orange’s Dexter Williams (Notre Dame). Miami did sign running back Mark Walton of Booker T. Washington.

All four running backs are four-star recruits on rivals.com, with Walton having the highest overall ranking.
