Homestead 4-star DE Dante Anderson updates recruitment after three Miami visits in June
Dante Anderson was one of the first players to visit the Miami Hurricanes when the 15-month dead period ended June 1, and then he went almost a month without returning to Coral Gables.
The four-star edge rusher spent most of the month traveling around the Southeastern United States to build out a bigger list of contenders. He took unofficial visits with the Florida State Seminoles and Florida Gators in the first week of June, he took his first official visit with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets the weekend of June 18, and then, right before a new dead period began Monday, he returned to Miami twice within a week.
“I just learned a lot,” Anderson said of his two visits last week.
First, he stopped by campus Wednesday to get a tour of the facilities alongside Homestead teammate — and three-star defensive tackle — Daniel Lyons. Defensive line coach Jess Simpson and director of recruiting David Cooney brought them around campus, and Simpson met with both about what sort of role they could play on the Hurricanes’ defense.
On Saturday, he was back at Miami for the Hurricanes’ biggest recruiting month of an extraordinarily busy June. He and Lyons were both inside the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility for Paradise Camp, alongside close to a dozen other major Miami recruiting targets for the Class of 2022. Neither worked out at the camp, but it was another opportunity for Anderson to get some time around coaches and players — and, this time, some of the Hurricanes’ most notable alumni.
“I just wanted to watch,” said Anderson, who had 10 sacks in six games last season.
When Anderson arrived, defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson grabbed the local defensive end and took him back into the locker room. While he stood on the sidelines and watched the camp, Anderson got a chance to chat with Baltimore Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell and Miami Dolphins linebacker Jaelan Phillips.
“We just talked,” said Anderson, who’s the No. 10 edge rusher in the 247Sports.com composite rankings for the 2022 recruiting cycle. “They said just keep working.”
Even after a productive month of visits, Anderson is in no rush to make a commitment, he said. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior still has four official visits left to take and he plans to take a few in August and then maybe a couple during the season, he said. Although he doesn’t have any dates set yet, the Hurricanes are in good position to bring him back to campus for a visit, as are the Ole Miss Rebels, Florida State and Florida.
Recruiting classes across the country will start to take shape in July with dozens of commitments scheduled for next month — including potentially half a dozen set to join Miami’s class — and Anderson, for now, plans to wait it out. When the new four-week dead period ends in July, Anderson will get back to work sorting through all his options.
“I’m taking a bunch in August, saving it for the season,” Anderson said. “I’m just chilling for right now.”
