Norland girls knock off shorthanded Jackson
It’s rare to see the Norland girls’ basketball team head into regionals already with nine losses, but this year’s young squad had to go through a bit of a learning curve.
Looking to reach state for the fourth consecutive season, Norland kicked off regional play with a convincing 54-20 home victory against a shorthanded Jackson team in the Region 4-6A quarterfinals at home on Thursday night.
Most of the second half was played with a running clock as the Vikings (17-9) advance to regional finals, where they will visit Doral Academy on Tuesday.
For Norland coach Carla Harris-Curry, the key to getting her inexperienced team that only has one senior to the point where its piecing everything together late was getting her players to buy in to her system.
“They’ve listened. They’ve bought into the vision,” Harris-Curry said. “They’ve learned to follow the plan of the coach. Your vision is not going to work. Jump on our vision, and it’ll work for us. That’s what they’ve been doing. They’ve been executing the things we talked about in practice.”
Norland dominated inside Thursday with 6-2 center Tyana Williams going for 19 points and seven rebounds.
Fellow big Brienne Williams went for four and seven while also executing the high-low pass well with Tyana, and guard Brittney Huell scored nine while Ashley Bostic dished out a game-high nine assists.
Norland’s signature press defense forced the Generals into 26 turnovers.
Jackson (11-9) only dressed six for the game after four players quit the team following the District 16-6A final to Doral Academy. Senior guard Kiera Mitchell had eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
