Gulliver girls advance to 4-2A regional final

Gulliver’s girls’ soccer team gave up a goal Tuesday afternoon against Ransom Everglades.

The rare occurrence didn’t deter Gulliver, however, during a 3-1 win over Ransom in a Region 4-2A semifinal at Gulliver.

Natalia Verde’s second goal of the game came in the 75th minute and moments after Gulliver had allowed only its second goal of the season.

The Raiders (15-0-1) will next take on either defending Class 2A state champion Delray American Heritage on the road at 7 p.m. or host North Broward Prep at 3:30 p.m. on Friday in the regional final.

Gulliver, which won a state title in 2011 and was a state runner-up in 2013, might just have the defensive formula to challenge for a return trip to next week’s state tournament in Melbourne.

“The girls’ commitment and hard work in practice has made them the team they are all season,” said first-year coach Andrew Vassell, who had coached as an assistant with former coach Everton Edwards the past two seasons.

Verde’s two goals followed Karenna Northland’s first-half goal to pace Gulliver.

Vassell credited his talented defenders for his team’s stingy defense all season in front of goalkeeper Nina Fernandez.
