American High sprinter Tyrese Cooper is Florida Athlete of Year
Following a phenomenal freshman season at American High, track and field sprinter Tyrese Cooper was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Association’s Athlete of the Year for Florida.
Cooper ran the best overall times in the 200 meters (20.87 seconds) and 400 meters (46.34) to win the state championships in both events. Cooper also ran the second-best time in the 100 meters (10.68).
Cooper ran the second-best time nationally in the 400 and third-best in the 200, which tied the state record (20.46).
Plantation American Heritage coach Greg Barnes was named the Overall Coach of the Year. In his third season leading the Patriots, Barnes led them to a state championship only two years after a 15th-place finish at state.
