Miami High to meet Ferguson in title game

They will meet again.

Miami High, the reigning Class 8A state champions, and Ferguson, a team considered its top challenger since before the season began, will play each other 7 p.m. Friday at Miami High for the GMAC girls’ basketball championship.

Each team won its respective semifinal Wednesday night at the Miami High gym securing a rematch of last year’s regional final won by the Stingarees on their way to the school’s second state championship.

▪ GMAC semifinal – Miami High 49, Miami Norland 36: “Sloppy” is the word Stingarees coach Sam Baumgarten used to describe his team’s performance Wednesday.

Still, Baumgarten recognized the value of a win over perennial powerhouse Norland.

“We definitely weren’t at our best tonight,” Baumgarten said. “We missed a lot of free throws and committed too many turnovers. We have to get those things corrected or we’re going to have a tough time in the championship on Friday.”

Miami High center Beatrice Mompremier helped open up a close game with 19 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. The Stingarees were also clutch from long distance, making five three-pointers. Alondra Angulo made three of them for her nine points.

“If you can hold a Norland team to 36, we’re doing good things,” Baumgarten said. “We just have to tweak a few things. Friday will be a very good test for us.”

▪ GMAC semifinal – Ferguson 78, South Dade 32: The Falcons closed the first quarter on a 25-2 run to break the game open. Ferguson forced a running clock in the second half.

Guard play keyed the dominant performance.

Senior Annie Osceola finished with 28 points, making five three-pointers, and had four steals.

Giolibeth Perez finished with 20 points and had nine assists. Natalia Pineda also had 10 points and four steals.

“It’s tough to guard Annie because she’s very crafty off the dribble and Gio is another player you have to keep in front of you,” Ferguson coach Gabriel Lazo said.

“[Friday’s] the game everyone wants to see and our girls need to step up. Miami High is the best team in the state and we’ll need to play very well to beat them.”
