TEAM OF THE WEEK
The Columbus soccer team won its first boys’ GMAC championship last week. The Explorers, the defending Class 5A state champions, beat American 1-0 in the final on the strength of a shutout by goalkeeper Stephen Milian and a goal by Andrew Fernandez.
ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Latravian Glover, South Miami, boys’ basketball: Glover had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Cobras to a 52-46 win over Columbus.
Kobie Johnson, American, boys’ basketball: Johnson had 21 points to lead the Patriots to a 62-54 win over Central.
Beatrice Mompremier, Miami High, girls’ basketball: Mompremier had a stellar 29 points, 15 rebounds and six blocks to lead the Stingarees to a 54-33 win over Lourdes.
Kristin Rampersad, Monsignor Pace, girls’ basketball: Rampersad had 29 points to lead the Spartans to a 57-54 win over Boca Grandview Prep.
Stephen Delgado, Goleman, wrestling: Delgado won four matches via pin to lead the Gators to four wins at the District 16-2A duals.
Randy McCray, Southridge, wrestling: McCray went perfect in his 106-pound matches to lead the Spartans to wins over Miramar Everglades, Cypress Bay and South Miami.
Joey Alamo, Westminster Christian, boys’ soccer: Alamo scored two goals in a 5-3 win over SLAM Academy and recently broke the school’s career goals scored record.
Claudio Wingartz, Palmer Trinity, boys’ soccer: Wingartz had three goals to lead the Falcons to a 4-3 win over St. Brendan.
Gabriela Frias, Doral, girls’ soccer: Frias scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Key West that clinched the District 16-3A championship.
Ava Gruener, Palmetto, girls’ soccer: Gruener set up both goals in the Panthers’ 2-1 upset win over South Dade in a District 16-5A semifinal that eliminated the previously unbeaten Bucs from the playoffs.
