Richar Padilla propels Jackson in GMAC

This has been the first year recent Honduran immigrant Richar Padilla has played on an actual soccer team.

Not only has he proven his skills throughout the season, he led the Jackson boys’ soccer team to the GMAC semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Reagan on Monday afternoon.

Padilla scored his 28th goal this season early in the second half. Jose Cruz scored the final goal for the Generals (13-3-4) with 10 minutes left. Junior Padilla picked up his eighth shutout.

“We had good and strong defense, we’re fortunate to have the win,” Jackson coach James Willenborg said.

This is Willenborg’s first season at Jackson and his team only has five returning players. Most of the other 15 players have recently immigrated from Honduras, like Padilla.

“Most of these kids have experience only in street play with friends, they’ve never really represented a school team. So it’s great watching them come so far because their skill set has always been there it’s all just about adapting to the team,” Willenborg said.

Jackson faces American at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the final. Willenborg was the coach at American before joining Jackson, and took American to the state final in 1999.
