High schools roundup: Booker T. holds off Glades Central to reach state semifinals

Freshman quarterback Daniel Richardson threw five touchdown passes to lead defending state Class 4A champion Booker T. over host Glades Central 35-21 on Friday night.

“We played a very good game, and I am happy with the win. I was focusing on short passes and my receivers and O-line really helped me out,” said Richardson who was 20-for-38 passing for 292 yards. “We need to play together and bond to win state.”

The Tornados will face Cocoa in the 4A state semifinals next week. Booker T. is seeking a fourth consecutive state championship.

The Tornados (7-5) trailed 7-6 midway through the second quarter until freshman quarterback Daniel Richardson found Horial Jones on a diving 33-yard catch. Richardson completed a two point conversion to Jones the put Booker T. up 14-7.

A touchdown pass to Raymond Flanders sent Booker T. into halftime up 21-7.

Booker T’s defense forced eight sacks and two interceptions ofquarterback James Blackmon of the Raiders (9-3).

Flanders led the Tornados receivers with seven receptions for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Darrius Scott had six receptions for 69 yards and two touchdowns. Blackmon led Glades Central with 191 yards passing and two touchdowns.

▪ Region 2A Final — First Baptist Academy 35, Dade Christian 7: The Crusaders had an uphill battle after fumbling on the opening kickoff.

The Lions (10-1) carried that moment through the first half, leaving Dade Christian with a 13-point deficit going into the third quarter.

The Lions’ Dylan Cibelli dominated the running game against the Crusaders (9-1), racking up 206 yards on 19 carries for two touchdowns.

“They are physical team,” Dade Christian coach Nick Martinez said. “I thought at first we matched their physicality, but it ended up wearing us down. The score was not indicative of how this game went.”

Dade Christian’s efforts didn’t come to fruition until the fourth quarter when Dewayne Kieth Terry Jr. scored on a 14-yard pass from Alec Carr. But the one touchdown wasn’t enough to turn the game around.

Despite the loss in the final, Martinez is hopeful for next season.

“I am proud of my guys and my staff,” he said. “With the squad we have coming back, there is no doubt that we will be looking to have the success that we have had this year. Next year we will be back, and no doubt we will win a championship.”
