State Champions Bowl Series games set

Miami Booker T. Washington and Miami Central just finished wrapping up the first “three-peats” in South Florida history.

The two national powerhouses have a chance to make a little more history right after Christmas.

Booker T. and Central found out Tuesday who they will compete against when each plays in the inaugural Burger King State Champions Bowl Series on Dec. 27 at Florida Atlantic University Stadium.

The event will pit nationally ranked state championship teams from Florida, Utah and Washington in three bowl-game style matchups that day in the first postseason event of its kind for football and will have a bearing on the national rankings.

Central, ranked No. 6 nationally by USA Today, will play No. 16 Bothell (Washington) at 4 p.m. in the second of the three games.

The Rockets just completed a 14-1 season, won their last 12 games and won their fourth Class 6A state title in five seasons —– a county record.

Booker T. (14-0), ranked No. 3 by USA Today, will be in the final game of the day at 8 p.m. and will face Bingham (Utah), ranked No. 8 by USA Today. The Tornadoes own the state’s longest active winning streak at 40 in a row and won their third consecutive Class 4A state title Dec. 6.

The first game will pit Florida Class 3A state champion Jacksonville Trinity Christian against Washington’s Eastside Catholic, ranked No. 23 by USA Today, at noon.

Each of the games will be televised live on ESPNU.

Bingham (13-1) won Utah’s Class 5A state championship on Nov. 21.

The Miners have won 27 of their past 28 games and have won five state titles over the past 15 seasons. Former Miami Dolphins Bruce Hardy and Kevin Curtis are among the school’s notable football alumni.

Booker T. defeated Virginia’s Oscar Smith and Georgia’s Tucker High before handing Central its only loss of the season.

Central beat Alabama powerhouse Hoover and Georgia’s Stephenson High School to open this past season.
