Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Doral boys’ swimming and diving team won its first state championship. The team of Adrian Moya, Adrian Aguilar, Alex Arrieta and Diego Faucher won the 200-freestyle relay state title and finished state runner-up in the 400-free relay.


Juwon Hamilton, South Dade, football: Hamilton had 193 yards on 25 carries and a touchdown to lead the Bucs over Southwest.

Michael Cox, Sunset, football: Cox completed 11-of-15 passes for 185 yards and threw four touchdown passes as the Knights won their first playoff game by beating West Broward.

Cliff Smith Jr., Southridge, football: Smith had a combined 141 yards rushing and receiving to lead the Spartans to a 17-7 playoff win over Belen Jesuit.

Ashley Quero, Palmer Trinity, girls’ volleyball: Quero had eight kills to lead the Falcons in their state final loss to Gainesville PK Yonge.

Julio Horrego, Mater Academy, boys’ swimming and diving: Horrego won the Class 3A state title in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.09.

Diamond Celestine, Hialeah, girls’ basketball: Celestine had 22 points in a 50-34 win over Krop.

Marco Meola, Ferguson, boys’ soccer: Meola had three combined goals to lead the Falcons to big wins over Varela and Coral Reef.

Sydney Denkert, Palmetto, girls’ soccer: Denkert had the game-winning goal in a 1-0 Panthers’ win over Ferguson.
