With Broward County’s two football powerhouses winning state championships Friday, Miami-Dade County’s two remaining squads — Miami Central and Miami Columbus — made their way to Orlando for their respective bids for championships.

Columbus (13-1), which is playing in its first state championship game since 1982, boarded its team buses Friday afternoon following a pep rally at the school, at which members of that last state finalist team read letters of encouragement to the current team.

The Explorers, finalists in 1980 and ’82, will try to win their first state championship when they play Apopka in the Class 8A state final at 7 p.m. Saturday night at the Citrus Bowl.

Central (13-1), ranked sixth nationally by USA Today, is trying to join Miami Booker T. Washington as the only South Florida teams to win three consecutive state championships. The Rockets take on Seffner Armwood for the second consecutive season in the Class 6A final at 1p.m. Saturday.

Booker T. Washington won its third state championship in a row last week when it beat Jacksonville Bolles for the Class 4A title.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

With Dillard’s undefeated record in jeopardy, Michael Green took matters into his own hands at the Hoop Exchange Southern Shootout on Friday. The standout guard and North Arizona recruit scored 15 points, including nine in the pivotal fourth quarter, as the Panthers recovered after blowing an 11-point lead to defeat Chaminade 51-49 at Cardinal Gibbons.

Dillard took command with a 15-4 lead at the start of the second quarter, only to watch the Lions storm back with a 12-2 run. Chaminade took a 41-39 lead into the fourth quarter, only to have Green rescue the Panthers with a three-point play, a tear drop and then a pivotal steal and layup to put the Panthers up 48-45 with 2:50 left in the game. Dillard forward Cedric Wright led all scorers with 17 points, including a key tip-in to keep the Panthers ahead 50-47 late in the game. Leandro Allende and Nikita Orap led Chaminade with 15 points.
