Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances

TEAM OF THE WEEK

The Gulliver girls’ swimming and diving team won the Class 2A state championship in Stuart with another dominant performance. Niki Urquidi and Kelly Fertel led the Raiders, winning two events each and helping Gulliver win all three relays. Urquidi won the 200-free and 500-freestyle events, and Fertel won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Rodrick Robinson, Norland, football: Robinson threw four touchdown passes and for 362 yards on 12-of-20 attempts to lead the Vikings to a 35-26 win over Killian.

Ashley Quero, Palmer Trinity, girls’ volleyball: Quero totaled 18 digs, 13 kills, six blocks and two aces to lead the Falcons to a win over Fort Myers Evangelical that clinched the school’s first trip to the state finals since 2008.

Joshua Collins, Belen Jesuit, boys’ cross-country: Collins placed third at state in the Class 3A race for a county-best finish.

Natalia Varela, Gulliver, girls’ cross-country: Varela finished a Dade-best fourth in the Class 2A state race and posted a county-best time of 18:40.41.

Cole Castro, South Dade, boys’ golf: Castro finished a Dade-best 21st after shooting a 154 over two days at the Class 3A state championships.

Daniella Spillert, Lourdes, girls’ golf: Spillert shot a two-day combined 150 to finished tied for seventh — a county best — in the Class 3A state championships.

Kyla Valls, Ransom, girls’ swimming: Valls won the 200-freestyle championship at the Class 1A meet and finished second in the 100 freestyle.

Igar Rodriguez, Miami Christian, boys’ bowling: With some clutch bowling, Rodriguez helped Miami Christian advance to the state quarterfinals in the team bracket in Orlando.

Francisco de la Camara, Belen, boys’ soccer: De la Camara had 12 goals combined in three wins this week against Reagan, TERRA and Archbishop McCarthy.

Alyssa Deno, Miami Springs, girls’ soccer: Deno had 11 goals and three assists combined in three wins against Mourning, Goleman and Northwestern.
