Michelle Mendez makes history, but Coral Park loses to South Miami to finish 0-10

Coral Park senior kicker Michelle Mendez missed wide left on the potential go-ahead, 23-yard field goal with 36.7 seconds remaining, and the Rams fell 15-13 in the season finale against South Miami at Tropical Park.

The Rams (0-10) took a 7-0 lead with 43.9 left in the first quarter on junior Kevin Carvajal’s 7-yard rushing touchdown. Mendez’s extra point made her the first girl to score in Coral Park football history.

The Cobras (3-7) responded with two second-quarter touchdowns by sophomore quarterback Antoine Wright Jr. to junior Adryan Ellis and senior Rene Gonzalez. Both came on fourth down from 14 and 13 yards, respectively. Coral Park junior Marcus Ruiz found the end zone on a 2-yard run with 8:16 to go in the third, but the two-point conversion failed to cap the scoring.

Antoine Wright Jr.: He went 6 for 15 with 57 yards and two touchdowns. He added 28 rushing yards on nine carries — second-most for the Cobras.

Marcus Ruiz: After just two first-half rushes, he finished with team highs in carries (10) and yards (53) with a score. Completed his lone pass attempt for 18 yards.

“Please block it or miss it. [Coral Park] drove down. They did what they had to do.”
