TEAM OF THE WEEK

After winning only six games combined over the past five seasons, the Sunset football team beat Mater Academy 24-16 for its eighth consecutive win and second district championship. Tarik Peters led the Knights with an interception and a touchdown catch as Sunset won the nine-team, District 16-7A title — its first since 2005.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Robert Brown, Coral Gables, football: Brown had a key interception return for a touchdown and led a stellar defensive effort that helped the Cavaliers beat previously unbeaten Columbus 20-10 and lock up the District 14-8A title.

James Barnes, Southwest, football: Barnes had 133 yards rushing and two touchdowns, caught five passes for 49 yards and recorded an interception on defense as Southwest beat Braddock 28-7 to secure a playoff berth.

Sophia Carrera-Justiz, Ransom Everglades, volleyball: Carrera-Justiz finished with 14 kills and 12 digs to lead the Raiders to a win over Westminster Christian in a Region 4-4A semifinal.

Raven Fong, Sunset, volleyball: Fong had 18 kills and four digs to lead the Knights to a Class 8A regional semifinal win over Doral Academy.

Ervin Marin, Mater Lakes, boys’ swimming and diving: Marin won the 200 IM and the 100 breaststroke at the Region 4-2A championships.

Irvin Hoost, St. Brendan, boys’ swimming and diving: Hoost won the 50- and 100-freestyle races at the Region 4-2A championships.

Niki Urquidi, Kelly Fertel, Emily Cordovi, Gulliver, girls’ swimming and diving: Urquidi, Fertel and Cordovi each won two events to lead the Raiders to the Region 4-2A championship.

Joshua Collins, Belen, boys’ cross-country: Collins ran a time of 15:56.60 to lead the Wolverines to the Region 4-3A title.

Natalia Varela, Gulliver, girls’ cross-country: Varela ran a Dade-best time of 18:53.87 at the Region 4-2A meet.

Chris Nido, Gulliver, boys’ golf: Nido finished a Dade-best 30th after a two-day total of 159 at the Class 1A state meet.

Alicia Cappellaro, Divine Savior, girls’ golf: Cappellaro shot a two-day total of 150 to finish a Dade-best 19th at the Class 1A state meet.

Charlie Forero, Killian, boys’ bowling: Forero bowled a 688 high series to lead the Cougars to the District 17 championship.

Angela Chapman, Ferguson, girls’ bowling: Chapman bowled a 534 to win the District 17 individual championship.

Bianca Mandrini, Coral Reef, girls’ soccer: Mandrini had two goals to lead the Barracudas to a 3-1 win over South Dade.
