Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Booker T. Washington football team defeated Belle Glade Glades Central to break the Miami-Dade County record for consecutive victories with 38 and advance to the Class 4A state semifinals for the fourth consecutive season. Mark Walton had 18 carries for 166 yards and two touchdowns.

The Columbus football team advanced to the Class 8A regional finals with a 22-0 win over Coral Gables. Ivan Smith caught two screen passes for touchdowns from quarterback Tucker Beirne and Andres Fernandez ran for 89 yards on 15 carries to lead the Explorers.


Anthony Jones, Central, football: Jones scored four touchdowns (three rushing, one kickoff return) and ran for 156 yards on 13 carries to lead the Rockets to a 35-19 comeback win against Hallandale in the Region 4-6A semifinals.

Jaquan Johnson, Killian, football: Johnson returned an interception for a touchdown and recovered a fumble to lead the Cougars to a 31-0 win over Belen in a Region 4-8A semifinal.

Jerald Butler, Miami High, boys’ basketball: Butler had 12 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Stingarees to a 51-50 win over Miami Beach.

Eugene Joseph, Westwood Christian, boys’ basketball: Joseph totaled 50 points, 30 rebounds, 11 blocks and 11 steals to lead the Warriors to wins over Dade Christian and Palmer Trinity.

Annie Osceola, Ferguson, girls’ basketball: Osceola had a combined 66 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and four blocks in wins against Coral Park, Braddock and Reagan.

Beatrice Mompremier, Miami High, girls’ basketball: Mompremier had 61 points, 27 rebounds, nine steals and four assists this past week in two wins for the Stingarees.

Veronica Minervino, Lourdes, girls’ basketball: Minervino had 18 points and five steals in a 74-67 win against South Miami.

Chris Cervantes, Doral, boys’ soccer: Cervantes had three goals to lead Doral to a 4-3 win over Ransom Everglades.

Alexis Rodriguez, Mater Academy, girls’ soccer: Rodriguez scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win against Goleman.
