Mater Academy keeps Commissioners Cup trophy after 48-6 victory over Westland Hialeah
A relatively new rivalry between district foes Mater Academy and Westland Hialeah remained firmly one-sided as the Lions crushed the Wildcats 48-6 in the second annual Commissioners Cup at Traz Powell.
Mater Academy (7-0, 7-0 in District 7A-16) scored a touchdown on its first two offensive plays of the game and scored 28 points in the first quarter in the victory, which sets up a showdown with Sunset next week for the district title.
Westland Hialeah (0-8, 0-7) struggled to move the ball down the field for most of the game, but spoiled the Lions’ shutout bid with a 38-yard fourth quarter touchdown pass from Calvin Victor to wide receiver Carlton Casimir.
After the Lions won last year’s inaugural Commissioners Cup in a 43-0 shutout, they get to keep the trophy over their local rivals for another year.
TOP TWO
Daniel Doriscar: The Mater RB had two rushing touchdowns and 67 yards rushing on six carries.
Darius Brown: Mater’s other RB had two touchdown runs and returned a punt 33 yards for a touchdown.
THEY SAID IT
“It was good to get a lot of our young guys in there and get experience before the playoffs. Our guys know what’s at stake next week against Sunset and they will be ready.”
— Mater coach Rocco Casullo
