Varela (3-5, 0-4) turned the ball over on downs with under a minute to go after recovering an onside kick in a District 15-8A matchup Thursday night at Southridge Park.
Coral Reef (3-5, 3-1) jumped out to a 14-point lead by scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions of the second half. The Vipers regrouped, coming within an extra point of tying the score with 2:12 remaining on backup quarterback Rey Torres’ 20-yard pass to Ricardo Matos. But a bad snap forced a kick wide left by Santiago Velez.
Seven Barracudas combined for 318 yards and three scores on 41 rushes. Matos caught two touchdowns for Varela.
Jordan Donaldson: Ran a team-high 13 times for 94 yards and a touchdown for Coral Reef.
Jonathan Aburto: Went 9 for 14 with 139 yards and two scores through the air for Varela. Added 63 rushing yards on 11 carries.
