Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Gulliver girls’ swimming and diving team won its first-ever state championship by capturing the Class 2A meet. Kelly Fertel led the Raiders with a victory in the 200 IM, and Gulliver also won the 400-free relay.


Francisco Castellanos, Belen, football: Castellanos had two interceptions that were key in the Wolverines’ 20-7 victory over Southridge in the Region 4-8A quarterfinals.

Keir Thomas, Central, football: Thomas had 10 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in a 49-6 win against Boynton Beach in the Region 4-6A quarterfinals.

Sammy Ceballos, Westminster Christian, volleyball: Ceballos had 11 kills and 12 digs in a Class 3A state semifinal against Clearwater Central Catholic.

Kristine Rios, Coral Reef, volleyball: Rios had 11 kills for the Barracudas in a Class 8A state semifinal loss to Jupiter.

Zuhayr Pigot, St. Brendan, boys’ swimming and diving: Pigot won the 50-yard freestyle state championship at the Class 2A meet in a time of 20.42.

Carlin Berryhill, Coral Reef, boys’ cross-country: Berryhill finished second overall at the Class 4A state meet with a time of 15:18.40.

Beatriz Ruan, Ransom Everglades, girls’ cross-country: Ruan finished second overall at the Class 2A meet with a time of 18:29.90.

Beatrice Mompremier, Miami High, girls’ basketball: Mompremier finished with a two-game combined total of 59 points, 25 rebounds, 15 steals, five blocks and seven assists in wins against North Miami High and Miami Beach.

Gabriel Ventoso and Teo Papazian, MAST, boys’ soccer: Ventoso and Papazian each had a goal as the Makos beat Ransom 2-1.

Alexis Rodriguez, Mater Academy, girls’ soccer: Rodriguez scored four goals in a 8-0 win against Central.
