A frantic finish at Milander on Thursday night came down to the final 30 seconds when Miami Springs scored and went for two to tie it and connected on a pass play. But the play was nullified by a Springs penalty and Mater’s Latavious Brini picked off the second attempt in the end zone to secure the 29-27 district win.
And with the victory, Mater and Sunset both wrapped up a playoff berth and will square off against each other in two weeks to decide the District 16-7A title. The Lions moved to 6-0, 6-0 while Springs fell to 4-3, 4-2.
