Columbus cruises past North Miami Beach in Region 4-8A quarterfinal

The Columbus Explorers (10-1) recorded their second consecutive shutout and third game in a row without allowing an offensive score with the 31-0 home victory over North Miami Beach in a Region 4-8A quarterfinal.

Columbus won its opening-round playoff game for the fourth consecutive season and will play either Coral Gables or North Miami on Thursday at Tropical Park in the regional semifinals.

The Explorers’ defense recorded six sacks, including three by junior Joshua Uche, and Zack VanDemark and Trajan Bandy each had an interception.

On offense, Ivan Smith ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns, and Andres Fernandez had 45 yards and two touchdowns.

“This was a weird end of the season with two games in which the starters were out by halftime and then we had a bye week so we have to shake off a little rust,” Columbus coach Chris Merritt said. “We came out of the game injury free which is key.”

▪ Columbus coach Chris Merritt was named the defensive coordinator for the 2015 U.S. Under-15 national team. Merritt will coach the team when it returns for the International Bowl Series in Arlington, Texas in January and February.
