It was supposed to be a clash of the top two teams in District 16-8A that would presumably determine who was tops in the district down south.

The result ended up proving how large that disparity between No. 1 and 2 really is.

Behind a defense that recovered five fumbles and a running game that netted 305 yards, South Dade pummeled Southridge 38-0 on Friday night at Harris Field to put itself firmly in the district’s drivers seat.

The Buccaneers are now 5-0 and 2-0 in the district.

“Our theme is one brick at a time,” South Dade coach Nate Hudson said.

“Defensively, we’ve been sound, but we wanted to press the emphasis on turnovers, so we did a lot of turnover drills.”

South Dade’s three-headed monster at running back of Jawon Hamilton (92 yards), Ivan Smith (79) and Tre’Ven Worthen (56) carried the load for the offense. Hamilton got the scoring started with a 38-yard touchdown.

Known for keeping it on the ground and running behind its massive offensive line, the Buccaneers opened up the offense a little bit too.

Quarterback Ludovic Saintvil tossed three touchdown passes -- two of them to Darnell Durham -- and completed nine of 17 passes for 123 yards.

“It’s a big step from us always running,” Saintvil said.

On top of the five takeaways against Southridge (2-4, 0-1), which lost its fourth in a row, the Bucs held a pair of four-star receivers in Freddie Pinder and Kemore Gamble without a catch.

“They were running straight curls, and we all ran those routes in practice,” South Dade defensive back and UM commit James Wiggins said. “[Defensive backs] just executed.”

The icing on the cake for South Dade came when Marlin GoodLuck stretched for one extra score in the final seconds to run the clock until it hit triple zero. Half the sideline rushed out to celebrate with the backup quarterback.

For Southridge, Rodney Scott caught three passes for 56 yards and Anthony Kinsey rushed for 70 yards on eight carries.
