Westminster Christian Warriors seek repeat at state volleyball

Westminster Christian broke Miami-Dade County’s long state championship drought in girls’ volleyball a year ago, led by a veteran core of seniors.

But with stars such as Sylvia Hernandez off to college, the Warriors were left with only two starters returning.

Seniors Sammy Ceballos and Jessica Moo Young stepped up as expected and led the Warriors back to the Class 3A state final four in Kissimmee where they will play Clearwater Central Catholic on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

But a group of the younger players have shown their versatility throughout the season and been the backbone behind a historic season in which Westminster Christian became the first Miami-Dade County team to advance to four consecutive state tournaments.

The Warriors (21-9), who won their first state title last season and secured the county’s first since 1995, took a little bit of time to click as a group this season.

But led by Ceballos (204 kills) and Young (149 digs), other players stepped into key roles. Senior Courtney Clausell and sophomore Nikkia Benitez became a force as middle hitters.

The group will be charged with slowing down a talented Clearwater Central Catholic squad led by 6-3 middle hitter Katie Moore, a Wake Forest commitment, and 5-10 setter Sara Brown, who is committed to LSU to play sand volleyball.

ALL-AMERICAN

Northwestern defensive back Deandre Baker accepted his invitation Monday to the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Baker, a University of Georgia commit, is one of 12 South Florida players who are expected to participate in this season’s game that will be played Jan.3 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
