Relay races a strength as Belen finishes 2nd

With only six swimmers this year instead of the nine that won last year, Belen Jesuit took second place in the boys Class 3A state swimming and diving championships Saturday.

Junior Raphael Marcoux posted personal bests to earn gold medals in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle races to lead Fort Lauderdale to a seventh-place finish.

Led by sophomore Julio Horrego, who won gold in the 100-yard breaststroke and took fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, Mater Academy’s boys team finished 11th.

In the girls’ competition, the best performance by a South Florida swimmer was Osianna McReed’s silver medal with a personal best 23.96 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. After finishing eighth as a sophomore and ninth as a junior, McReed said she was happy to take second.

“It was my last year and I got the podium, and that was one of my goals,” McReed said. “I can’t argue with that.”

Fort Lauderdale junior Fatimah Westbrook took fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke and anchored her 200-yard freestyle relay team to a seventh-place finish.

Belen Jesuit earned most of its points in the three relay races. The Wolverines won gold in the 200-yard medley relay, fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay and sixth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

“For the six guys who competed tonight, I think we did very well,” said senior Miguel Basalo, who recently committed to Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

“Our goal was to compete to the best of our ability,” said Belen senior Miguel Limia, who was competing in his first state finals. “We’ve been overcoming adversity all year after losing some of our best swimmers from last year to graduation. But the sophomores stepped up.”

One of those Belen sophomores was Alejandro Carriazo, who was third in the 100-yard backstroke and swam with two relay teams.

“It was a challenge,” Carriazo said, “but you have to do anything for the team.”

Carriazo shaved about 1.5 seconds off personal bests in both his individual race and in the backstroke leg of the medley relay.

In the individual race, “I took a peek after the last turn and saw myself in third and I didn’t feel anything in my body,” he said. “I was surprised and I wasn’t expecting so much.

Raphael Marcoux’s younger brother, sophomore Philippe Marcoux, was runnerup in the 100-yard freestyle, but said he knows he won’t have a chance for gold in that event until he is senior.

“Swimming next to my brother has always been a pleasure,” 15-year-old Philippe Marcoux said, “He definitely motivates me and is my role model, but I can’t wait until he leaves for college.”

For his part, Raphael Marcoux said he was happy his brother finished behind him in the 100-yard freestyle. “It’s a great feeling,” he said. “I really wanted one-two.”

Raphael Marcoux won the 50-yard sprint race by more than a half-second and the 100-yard by a full second, considered large margins in such short races.

The Marcoux brothers also helped Fort Lauderdale take a silver medal in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
