Quiles’ field goal lifts HML to upset of Norland

Dealing with the disappointment of being eliminated from the playoffs in a district tiebreaker less than 48 hours earlier and a coach who was freely substituting his backups for a good portion of the game, the Norland Vikings were ripe for an upset on Wednesday afternoon. And that’s exactly what happened.

In a game that was switched at the last minute to North Miami Stadium when the Milander Stadium lights were vandalized, the Hialeah-Miami Lakes Trojans took maximum advantage of their opportunity by pulling off a 3-2 upset in the season finale for both teams.

Struggling on offense all day, the Vikings, thanks to a 35-yard punt return by Steven McIntosh, were set up at the HML 32 with 4:10 left. But a 35-yard field-goal attempt by Kevon Oconner fell 2 yards short of the crossbar with 2:29 left.

“I can’t speak for [Norland], but this was big for us today,” said HML coach Horane Allison, whose team finished with a 5-5 record. “We’re working hard trying to build a program here, and we basically were in every single game this year so to do this today gives us a great springboard into the offseason and next season.”

Trailing 2-0 on a late-first-quarter safety when quarterback Issiah Small was tackled in the end zone, the Trojans’ three points came on the final play of the first half when kicker Yayo Quiles booted one from 39 yards that richocheted off the left upright and went through.
