Yaniz leads Miami Christian boys to District 16 bowling title

Alex Yaniz was mobbed by teammates after tossing a 10th-frame turkey in Miami Christian’s District 16 sweep of Reagan in bowling Tuesday at Pembroke Pines Lanes.

Mourning edged Miami Lakes 3-1 for the girls’ title.

“It meant a lot to me,” Yaniz said. “It has been an incredible ride. It was a little bit of mixed emotions. At times I thought maybe I should show some emotion. I was able to hold it until the last shot. And I’m as happy as ever.”

Yaniz’s 662 series was also the highest individual score, followed by teammate Cody Stevens’ 653.

American’s Trace Reid, Hialeah Gardens’ Andre Barrientos and Miami Christian’s Jeffrey Yaniz rounded out the top five individual scores and will advance to state next week in Orlando.

Hialeah Gardens’ Nicole Rios led the girls with a 414 series. Goleman’s Gabriela Sallai also advanced to state with a second-place score of 391.
