Norland’s stingy defense gets plenty of offensive help in 31-0 rout of American
Norland’s 2014 record overshadowed what was one of the stingiest defenses in Miami-Dade County.
Senior linebacker Emmett Rice gave a demonstration Thursday night why the Vikings defense could be even better.
But more importantly for Norland, it looks like has an offense that can back it up.
Propelled by Rice’s five sacks and two rushing touchdowns from Chavis Wright and two touchdown passes by quarterback Rodrick Robinson, Norland blanked and routed American 31-0 at North Miami Stadium.
Rice, a 6-3, 195-pound FSU commitment, was celebrating his birthday Thursday and spent a good chunk of the time in American’s backfield.
“It felt great on my birthday to help my team to a victory like this,” Rice said. “We have some bad blood, but sort of a friendly brotherhood with those guys at American so we had to come out and play smash mouth football.”
The Vikings (2-0), who went 3-6 last season and came up on the short end of a three-team tiebreaker for the District 16-6A runner-up spot, gave up only 16 points per game a year ago.
Other than 12 points allowed in the second half last week in a win against Jacksonville Ribault, Norland has been downright nasty to its first two opponents.
The Vikings averaged only 10.6 points per game last season and scored 95 overall.
They’ve scored 54 in two games so far.
“We have a lot of guys on offense that are making plays,” Norland coach Daryle Heidelburg said. “Rodrick is a three-year starter, Wright is making plays and the offensive line is developing some continuity.”
Wright, a senior, scored the first and final touchdowns for Norland and finished with 77 yards rushing.
Robinson, a third-year starting quarterback, showed his ability to hit the deep ball late in the game connecting with Jordan Robinson for a 71-yard strike down the middle of the field that gave Norland a 25-0 lead.
There was room for improvement as Rodrick Robinson finished with 198 yards passing, but threw a pair of interceptions. Norland had three extra points blocked and committed 17 penalties for 170 yards.
Heidelburg emphasized the need to correct those mistakes in order to become a true state championship contender in a tough District 16-6A race.
