Last week’s best Miami-Dade high school performances


The Ransom girls’ volleyball team won its third consecutive Smoothie King Invitational, defeating Tampa Prep in the final. Caroline Sklaver earned MVP honors with eight kills, four blocks, 10 assists and two aces in the final. Ransom went 5-0 in match play.

The Ferguson volleyball team secured its second GMAC volleyball championship in a row. Sophomore Michelle Cuervo and junior Bria Beverly each had eight kills in the championship match against Southwest.


Shemar Smith, Jackson, football: Smith had three sacks to lead the Generals to a pivotal 14-12 win over Cardinal Gibbons.

Frank Battle, Belen, football: Battle caught five passes including three on the final drive and the game winner, in a key district victory against Varela.

Cedric Miller, Central, football: Miller totaled 206 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 13 carries to lead the Rockets to a 56-21 win over Northwestern.

Sammy Ceballos, Westminster Christian, volleyball: Ceballos had 19 kills, 16 digs and 14 service points to lead the Warriors to wins over Tampa Berkeley Prep and Coral Reef.

Katerina Rey, Florida Christian, volleyball: Rey had 22 kills combined to lead the Patriots to wins over Gulliver and Carrollton.

Ryan Rodriguez, Belen, boys’ cross-country: Rodriguez won the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational with a time of 16:29.

Aylwyn Hernandez, Ferguson, girls’ cross-country: Hernandez won the Junior Orange Bowl Invitational with a time of 19:37.

Nicole Urquidi, Gulliver, girls’ swimming: Urquidi won the 200-freestyle event at the Woodson Invitational.

Andrew Cecol, Belen, boys’ golf: Cecol shot a 74 to lead Belen to the District 23-3A championship.

Tanya Eathakotti, Carrollton, girls’ golf: Eathakotti shot a 77 to win the District 24-1A championship.

Kevin Morrissey, TERRA, boys’ bowling: Morrissey rolled a 651 high series to lead the Wolves to a win against Ferguson.

Kristi Perlberg, TERRA, girls’ bowling: Perlberg rolled a high series of 494 to lead TERRA to a win against Ferguson.
