Palmer Trinity softball wins districts. Plus more softball, region volleyball, basketball
For the first time in 40 years (since 1986), the Palmer Trinity girls’ softball team won a district title.
The Falcons defeated Westminster Christian 10-7 for the District 16-2A title.
Trailing 2-1, Palmer Trinity (8-4) scored twice in the bottom of the fourth. Tied at three, the Falcons went ahead 4-3 in bottom of the fifth and then exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth. Westminster Christian (9-13) rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh, but it was too little, too late.
Emmy Cerda was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts, while allowing seven hits, two walks and four earned runs. She also helped her cause with a walk and an RBI and was hit-by-a-pitch twice. Gina Pineda went 1-2 with two walks and 3 RBI, and Hailey Rodriguez was 2-2 with a double, two walks, a run and an RBI.
Catcher Kinsey Cerda was 1-3 with a double, a walk and two runs, and Melissa Nieves went 1-for-3 with two runs, a walk and an RBI. Davianna Herrera walked three times, scored and had an RBI, and Maya Vanzant walked twice, scored and had an RBI.

In a District 14-3A showdown, Cardinal Gibbons edged Coral Springs Charter 3-2 in 10 innings for the championship.
Riding a 19-game win streak, the Chiefs are 2-0 this season against Coral Springs Charter with the other win also by just one run, 1-0 on April 22 in the BCAA Big 8 Championship.
The Panthers (18-4) other two defeats were to West Palm Beach Oxbridge Academy 1-0 in eight innings to open the season on Feb. 24 and 6-5 in eight innings to Melbourne on April 10. Melbourne (24-1) won District 7-6A, and Oxbridge Academy (19-3) was a District 13-2A runner-up to West Palm Beach King’s Academy (18-4). Cardinal Gibbons lone loss this season was 4-3 to Doral Academy, champions in District 15-6A.
Cardinal Gibbons and Coral Springs Charter could meet again in an elimination game in the region final with a trip to the state final four at stake, but District 16-3A champ Somerset Academy Silver Palms Miami, another good program, is also vying for that opportunity. Coral Springs Charter and Somerset (20-5) have history in regionals, close battles, and they could face each other again, but this time in a region semifinal.
In the exciting district final, senior Lydia Berent was the winning pitcher for Cardinal Gibbons, allowing two runs, zero earned, on five hits and two walks, while striking out 20 in 10 innings. Coral Springs Charter starter Courtney Wahlbrink, a junior, also pitched well, allowing three runs, two earned, on 11 hits and two walks, while striking out 15 in 10 innings.
Chiefs’ freshman Kennadi Wilson went 3-for-5 with a double and a run, and sophomore Sloane Schaefer was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Senior Sara Wrzosek was 1-for-5 with an RBI. and sophomore Skylar Flack went 3-for-4 with a walk. Berent helped her cause, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, a run and an RBI. For Coral Springs Charter, freshman Jazzy Chung went 2-for-4 with a duuble and a run, and sophomore Bree Martinelli was 1-for-2 with a sacrifice and was hit-by-a-pitch.
Cardinal Gibbons scored twice in the top of the first, and the Panthers evened things with two runs in the bottom of the second, and then neither team scored again until the top of the 10th.
In the District 16-3A final, Somerset Academy Silver Palms Miami scored nine times in the bottom of the fourth to break it open en route to an 11-0 victory over St. Brendan’s.

Braddock won back-to-back district titles. The Bulldogs defeated Homestead 14-2 in five innings for the District 16-6A title.Emely Ramirez was the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts. Emily Cancio went 3-for-3 with a triple, and Anelis Goberna and Diana Mitjans each batted 2-for-3.

Region boys’ volleyball
In a Region 4-1A boys’ volleyball quarterfinal, LaSalle came from behind to defeat Somerset Academy South in a five-set thriller 19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-13.
LaSalle spotted Somerset the first two sets before regrouping to win the next three sets to advance to the semifinals in front of an excited hometown crowd.
Trailing 12-11 in the third set, the Royal Lions (14-7) got the momentum swung in their direction by going on an 11-1 run to go up 22-13 before eventually closing out the set.
Somerset (13-12) enjoyed a 13-8 lead in the fourth set and appeared on its way to advancing to a first ever regional semifinal before the bottom fell out.
Led by Daniel Auza, who finished the match with 33 kills, LaSalle went on a 17-5 run to close out the set and force a fifth and deciding set.
LaSalle led the fifth 10-5 before the Hurricanes battled back to tie it at 12. Auza delivered the match-clinching kill.
LaSalle will travel south to Homestead Somerset Silver Palms on Tuesday, May 5 at 7 p.m. Somerset Silver Palms defeated Miami Sunset in straight sets in another quarterfinal.
