Downtown Doral, St. Brendan coaches are Dade Cheerleading Co-Coaches of the Year
St. Brendan’s competitive cheerleading team’s trophy collection continues to get bigger after adding a 10th state championship in the sport.
For Downtown Doral, it’s an exciting time of firsts as it brought home its first major hardware this season with the school’s first state championship in any sport.
Their coaches - St. Brendan’s Victoria Sicre and Downtown Doral’s Maria Franco - are the Miami Herald’s Miami-Dade County Competitive Cheerleading Coaches of the Year.
Sicre is no stranger to seeing the Sabres succeed at the highest levels.
Since 2022, Sicre has guided St. Brendan to four state championships and a state runner-up finish. The Sabres reached double-digits in state titles this past January after winning the Class 1A Large Division championship, which marked their third consecutive state title and 10th in the past 11 seasons.
St. Brendan followed up on that success with a runner-up finish at nationals. The Sabres were second among 40-plus teams in the Medium Varsity DII.
St. Brendan was led by a strong core of seniors. Highlighting the group were Veronica Hutner, Megan Martin, Bianca Miro and Danielle Perez.
Downtown Doral has had a memorable winter, also winning a state title in boys’ soccer for the first time. But their cheerleaders earned the distinction of being the first Dolphins’ squad to accomplish the feat after they won the Class 1A Large non-tumbling division title.
Franco presided over a team, which participated in nationals for the first time. Downtown Doral came up short of qualifying for the finals at nationals, but returns most of its team and will aim for more in 2027.
The Dolphins core is still relatively young and was led by sophomores Alexia Rey and Brooke Coronel and juniors Fabrizio Mastropasqua and Paulina Menon.
