For two pairs of stars at Doral and Somerset softball, it’s ‘one last ride’
Anabela and Zoey Abdullah are sisters, and two of the foundational pieces of Doral Academy’s sustained run of excellence the past six years.
Somerset Silver Palms’ Taylor Rebhan and Ava Stevens aren’t related, but have bonded on the softball field like sisters in recent years while building the Stallions into one of the state’s best teams.
But for each pair of talented athletes, this season will be their “last ride” together at the high school level.
And they all hope to finish it with gold medals as they did last season when they led their respective teams to state titles.
Both Doral and Somerset are favorites to repeat in Classes 7A and 3A respectively.
Anabela Abdullah is a senior shortstop and a University of Texas signee, who has been a part of Doral’s six consecutive trips to the state final four and two state championships over that span.
Rebhan is a senior, a Louisville signee, one of the most talented shortstops in the country, and a major contributor in recent years for Silver Palms during their three consecutive trips to state.
Their final high school journey together is also a passing of the torch.
At Doral, Zoey Abdullah is only a sophomore, and one of the best outfielders in the state, who like her sister, has represented Team USA in recent years.
At Somerset, Stevens is a versatile junior pitcher and excellent hitter, who is committed to Notre Dame, and has been a force both in the circle as well as at the plate during the Stallions’ rise.
Joining the Abdullah’s in Doral’s bid for a third state title are freshman infielder Alondra Aldebol-Borrero, sophomore outfielders Sara Utrera and Ashley Tremont. The Firebirds’ outfield got even stronger with the arrival of sophomore Melanie Sweet, a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas.
At Somerset, Rebhan and Stevens have several talented teammates, including junior second baseman Lani Gonzalez, freshman catcher Caylee Cerda, sophomore outfielder Carley Hernandorena and senior outfielder Zoey Mateo.
MORE OUTLOOKS
Westminster Christian (20-8-1, 2A state semifinalist) returns the majority of the players from last season’s run to state, giving them a strong opportunity to chase the school’s sixth state championship. Junior pitcher Kaley Dyer leads the Warriors in the pitching circle. Junior Jasmine Armenteros leads the infield while junior Abi Barboza leads the outfield. Sophomore infielder Casey Lesman, sophomore catcher Gaby Perez and junior infielders Mya Rodgers and Erin Perez add depth.
Coral Reef (10-5, 7A regional semifinalist) likely remains the most talented public school in Dade County, and will need their core of seniors to step up in a tough Region 4-7A that includes Western and West Broward. Senior third baseman Chloe Junco is a Campbell commit and senior pitcher/first baseman Quin Wylie has signed with New College of Florida in Sarasota. Senior catcher/outfielder Brianna Fields and senior pitcher/outfielder Erin Zambrano are also back, along with junior shortstop Sierra Johnson.
Florida Christian (19-9, 2A regional finalist) returns a solid core with key additions, which could vault them closer to state. Sophomores Sam Otano, an outfielder/first baseman, and Danbee Kim, an infielder, are two of the key returning starters. Sophomore catcher Bridgette Valdera, a transfer from Somerset Silver Palms, adds depth along with junior pitcher Jules Miranda and infielder Charlee Arana.
Palmer Trinity (13-7, 2A regional quarterfinalist) is once again led by the sibling duo of juniors Kinsey and Emmy Cerda. Kinsey, a shortstop, and Emmy, the Falcons’ ace, are joined by junior infielder Hailey Rodriguez and senior catcher/first baseman Gina Pineda.
Palmetto (9-14, 7A regional quarterfinalist) is coming off one of its roughest seasons ever, but returns enough talent for a potential return to the regional playoffs. Senior outfielder/catcher Madeline Baldwin and senior pitcher Lauren Fells lead the Panthers.
Carrollton (13-5, 3A regional quarterfinalist) returns only two starters with junior first baseman Grace Diez and senior catcher Emma Althage.
Lourdes returns All-Dade first team senior catcher Valeria Portuondo as well as junior pitcher/first baseman Mia Rivera as the Bobcats aim for the playoffs under new coach Carlos Manzanero. Junior outfielder Jianna Bustamante and sophomore catcher/infielder Tatiana Hernandez are also players to watch.
AIE Charter (10-8, 1A regional semifinalist) will vie for a deeper playoff push with a young, but talented squad led by senior utility player Mia Gonzalez, who has played for the Aviators since the sixth grade. She will be joined by sophomore corner infielder Bella Barreiro, senior first baseman/outfielder Selena Martinez and freshman pitcher/utility Jordan Miranda.
Braddock (16-5, 6A regional quarterfinalist) returns a quartet of seniors that the Bulldogs hope will lead them to another winning season. Pitcher/infielder Emily Ramirez, outfielder Anais Gonzalez, first baseman Anelis Goberna and outfielder/infielder Emily Cancio form that group.
Monsignor Pace will be led by junior pitcher/shortstop Melissa Carrasco, junior third baseman/pitcher Brianna Aguas and senior first baseman/catcher Yeyling Lopez.
Ransom Everglades (0-15) will try to get back in the win column this season with a group led by junior third baseman Addie Rothfield, senior first baseman Gianna Carvalho and senior outfielder/pitcher Beatrice Hernandez.
