South Dade wrestling edges Southwest to cap sweep of GMAC championships
South Dade’s boys’ wrestling team claimed another state duals title last month.
Last week, the Bucs lost a dual meet, however, against reigning Class 1A state champion Mater Lakes.
On Friday, South Dade bounced back with a strong performance to secure yet another GMAC tournament championship.
The Bucs hope the victory will lead to a consistent finish as they enter the postseason and chase their 13th consecutive IBT (Individual Bracket Tournament) state championship and 21st overall.
South Dade’s 306 points scored overall during the two-day meet held Thursday and Friday at its home gym secured the first GMAC championship with Humberto Reyna as head coach after he took over for longtime coach Vic Balmeceda this offseason.
Reyna watched as six Bucs secured individual GMAC titles, highlighted by dominant performances by Tyree Graham at 175 pounds and Jovani Solis at 144 pounds.
Each wrestler scored tech falls to repeat as GMAC champions with Solis beating Homestead’s Kemauri Middleton, 20-4, and Graham beating Central’s Ibrahim Gowon, 19-4.
Bryan Morales also prevailed at 113 pounds with a 6-3 decision over Southwest’s Brandon Canaval, and was later joined by Guillermo Jaramillo, who scored a 11-1 major decision at 132 pounds over Southridge’s Alfredo Cheang. The Spartans finished third overall with 224.5 points.
South Dade’s Armand Williams won the 150-pound title with a 14-4 win over Southwest’s Nelson Hued, and Kaleb Williams pinned Southwest’s Bryan Garcia in the third round of their bout at 138 pounds.
The Eagles finished a close second as a team with 289.5 points. Southwest was led by its three individual GMAC champions - Logan Montero (106 pounds), Lazaro Soto (120) and Didier Novoa (157).
Montero outdueled teammates Alejandro Ravelo to win 3-1 while Soto scored a major decision, 8-0, over Braddock’s Janmichael Broche. Novoa also scored a major decision, 10-0, over Columbus’ Tomas Campian. The Explorers placed fourth with 197 points.
The victory for South Dade followed last week’s dominant performance by its girls’ squad, which scored 238.5 points to finish well ahead of runner-up North Miami’s 166 points at the meet held at Coral Park. Five South Dade wrestlers won individual titles - Kimberly Picado (105), Victoria Sifuentes (110), Willow White (130), Amirah Williams (190) and Kenzie Barrett (235).
Karen Martinez (115), Suzie Polidor (125) and Viktoriya Devochkinn (155) won individual titles for the Pioneers.
