Columbus golfers secure GMAC boys’ title; MAST eighth-grader wins girls’ crown
The Columbus’ boys’ golf team continued its dominance of the GMAC championship on Monday with clutch individual performances from its top golfers at the Redland Golf and Country Club.
Senior Joe Fernandez won the individual championship after shooting an even par 72 and then winning a one-hole playoff against sophomore and teammate Jake Williams, who also shot a 72.
Freshman Sebastian Eterovic shot a 1-over 73 to place third and then also won a playoff over Palmetto’s Geoffrey Laklak to break a tie.
The Explorers edged the Panthers by five shots for the team title.
On the girls’ side, MAST Academy eighth grader Francesca Black won her first individual GMAC title after she shot an 82. Black edged Miami Beach’s Lexi Weissman, who shot an 83. The Makos were the only team with enough golfers to finish with a team score as they shot 354.
