Longtime Booker T. Washington football coach Ice Harris hired at Mater Academy
Booker T. Washington’s “Ice Age” is over.
Tim “Ice” Harris, who led BTW to state titles in 2007, 2012 and 2013, told The Herald on Tuesday that he is now the new coach at Mater Academy, a charter school in Hialeah Gardens.
Harris, 60, said he is also newly retired from Miami Dade County Public Schools after serving for 35 years as an administrative assistant. Harris also coached on the college level as an assistant at the University of Miami and briefly as head coach at Florida Memorial University.
Jase Stewart, who coached Mater to a 6-5 record and a playoff berth last year, will now serve as Harris’ assistant head coach.
“We’re just going to build on the foundation that Jase put down,” Harris said. “We’re going to put together a great coaching staff and make things better.”
Harris, by the way, said he got his nickname in homage to former NBA star George “The Iceman” Gervin.
“I can still play basketball,” Harris said. “I can still do a finger roll (like Gervin). I’ve got that on lock down.”
