Braddock boys and girls repeat as GMAC swimming and diving champions

Braddock’s swimming and diving teams are gearing up to make another run at those elusive state championships next month.

The Bulldogs added momentum on Thursday by sweeping the team titles of the GMAC championship meet for the second consecutive season.

At a meet both sides dominated at Miami-Dade’s North campus, Braddock’s boys won all three relays while its girls’ squad won the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay. MAST won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:57.73.

The Bulldogs boys, who have finished as state runners-up two consecutive seasons, cruised to the team title with 149 points. Braddock finished comfortably ahead of MAST Academy, which had three individual champions, and totaled 91 points.

On the girls’ side, the Bulldogs edged MAST with 128 points to the Makos’ 117 points.

The boys were led by George Gonzalez, who won the 200 free with a time of 1:41.90 and the 100 freestyle in 47.14 seconds. Anthony Pineiro won the 50 freestyle in 21.83 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 59.86 seconds.

Paola Negrin secured the championships of the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:59.64 and the 100 backstroke title with a time of 1:03.41. Gioia Balzano won the 50 freestyle in 25.28 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 53.43 seconds. Elyse Wood won the 100 butterfly in 58.23 seconds and the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.00.
