Belen’s Rodriguez cruises to Youth Fair boys’ golf title, Columbus wins team crown
Belen Jesuit golfer Lorenzo Rodriguez continues to dominate in his senior season coming off a state championship as a junior.
On Tuesday afternoon at Country Club of Miami, Rodriguez put on a display of skill once again as he cruised to the Dade County Youth Fair individual championship after shooting a 7-under par 63.
Rodriguez, who became the county’s first individual state champion in 22 years by winning the Class 3A state crown last season, distanced himself from the field on Tuesday. He finished six shots ahead of four golfers - MAST’s Borja Friend and Cipriano Montoya, Columbus’ Nicholas Shortal and Coral Gables’ Lorenzo Cantarel, who all shot a 1-under 69 and tied for the runner-up spot.
Columbus secured the team crown, but needed to play an extra hole to get it done as it edged MAST Academy.
Each team shot 286. But the Explorers clinched the tiebreaker on a birdie by Columbus senior Hubert Ramirez.
It was a return to the top in the event for Columbus, which finished below tournament champion Ransom Everglades last season.
Florida Christian finished third as a team followed by Belen Jesuit.
The girls’ Youth Fair tournament will be played on Wednesday also at Country Club of Miami.
