Poll: Which Miami-Dade high school athlete should be the Miami Herald’s Player of the Week? (Oct. 15)
Miami-Dade County’s top athletes kept delivering top notch performances as we moved closer to the fall sports playoffs.
This week, we resume a weekly feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week in Miami-Dade County high school sports.
Below is a look at the five candidates from last week’s action. Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Oct. 19, around 10 p.m.

Here are the candidates from last week’s events:
▪ E.J. Marcelin, Miami Central, football: Despite losing in overtime to Norland, Marcelin recorded four sacks and had eight tackles for loss to lead the Rockets’ defense.
▪ Ben Hanks Jr., Miami Booker T. Washington, football: Hanks Jr. intercepted two passes and returned both for touchdowns to lead the Tornadoes to a 28-20 victory over Miami Northwestern.
▪ Lucas Goenaga, Miami Palmetto, football: Goenaga completed 17 of 23 passes for 283 yards, three touchdowns and one interception to lead the Panthers to a 42-34 win over South Dade, which clinched the District 16-4M title. Goenaga also ran for two touchdowns and totaled 50 yards on 10 carries.
▪ Annabella Cardona, Miami Braddock, girls’ cross-country: Cardona ran a time of 19:34.85 to secure the GMAC individual title and lead the Bulldogs to the team title.
▪ Andre Fletcher Jr., Hialeah, football: Fletcher Jr. recovered a fumble and had one of Hialeah’s three interceptions in a 24-7 win over North Miami that clinched the Thoroughbreds first district title since 2019.
